In-Service Training Kept on Steady Course

(EMU) – St. Kitts, January 22, 2018: The In-Service Teacher Training sessions which stated in September 2017, are organized every year to orient new teachers and give much needed support and guidance within the first academic year according the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. William Hodge.   The 2017-2018 cohort of teachers has been meeting weekly for interactive, creative and informative sessions which would ultimately eliminate any deficiencies they may have had prior to entering the classroom and find new exciting methods of delivering topics. While delivering a lesson on techniques which include inclusivity in the classroom, Mr. William Hodge revealed that the training has been an influencing factor for the teachers and the Ministry has been reassured that their attempt to promote highly qualified and motivated teachers is not in vain.

“So far the teachers have been very receptive and open to the training, they attend punctually for each session,” stated Mr. Hodge. He highlighted that the Ministry is fully aware that teachers are a vital part of the civil service, thus giving extra support wherever necessary. “In addition to the in-house training - school based staff development that the schools organize, the Ministry lends an additional layer of support for teachers. We know that teaching is a challenge and we want to equip them (teachers), with strategies, methods and tips in classroom management.”

He disclosed that a new addition to the programme this year comes in the form of an intense two-day workshop during the Easter Break which would be held at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel.

This prospect has created an understandable level of excitement amongst the teachers and its implementation is expected to boost morale.

Lectures, power point presentations, simulations, group projects, and collaborative learning are just some of the approaches that instructors, who are past educators themselves, use to deliver content to the cohort.  At the end of the year the teachers would produce a comprehensive portfolio and presentation to a panel.
