The ten-week Supervisory Management Course, at the University of the West Indies Open Campus which provides a practical framework for learning and applying vital skills and techniques in supervision, was one the Ministry felt necessary for each principal to attend to discover best practices that would be applicable in their profession. Commenting on the new initiative by the Ministry, Permanent Secretary, Vincent Hodge stated, “We are very serious about ensuring that our principals are trained, and equipped, to manage their schools. You are the leaders of the institutions and we are depending on you to ensure the success of your respective institutions.”

Eugene Hamilton, Minister of Agriculture et al, congratulated the principals and implored them to put into practice what was taught at the course for the empowerment of our nation’s youth. He stated that they should continue to seek to master their task.
“As educational leaders you are tasked with the shaping of positive school culture built on shared leadership, respect and responsibility. This involves effectively delegating tasks building capacity in others, promoting a cohesive community, encouraging participation and feedback from everyone and mentoring.”
Principal of the Saddlers Primary School, Mrs. Carol Boddie gave a brief reflection of the course remarking, “We as principals do appreciate the Ministry’s initiative of offering the course to us, while some of the information was familiar the packaging was intriguing and there is not an individual who can honestly say that they have not benefited from being participant.”
The principals garnered knowledge from a wide array of topics such as, Evaluation of Employees Performance, Handling Discipline & Grievance, Organisational Communication, Problem Solving & Decision Making, Motivation & Work Attitudes and Team Management. The certificates of completion were distributed by, Dr. Tricia Esdaille, Chief Education Officer, Ministry of Education and Mrs. Palsy Wilkin, Principal Education Officer (Nevis).
